Writing a Discourse Community Ethnography is something that truly impacted me as a writer. I learned so much about what discourse communities are and how they are involved in so many things that happen in our daily lives. Many times we don’t even realize that they are happening and that is one of the things that I found the most interesting. As you may know, a discourse community is a group of people who share common goals. For example, people who study Biology in college want to earn a degree of science to maybe attend a medical school. In my paper I spoke about a laboratory class that I was taking, named Phage Hunters. I found it very interesting but I also helped myself figure out how much I truly liked it. With this paper, I was able to point out every aspect of this class that I had not paid attention to or noticed. I felt like this class was truly interesting, but at the same time I paid more attention to what I truly thought about it. I think that with all of the close attention I paid towards it I discovered that perhaps I did not want to do something like this for the rest of my life. I always stuck to the idea that I had to study that, but then I realized that it really isn’t. This assignment has truly helped me not only learn more about the class, but about myself and to me, that is a huge accomplishment.
When it comes to the way I feel about this assignment, I would say that I could revise it better and change a few things. I definitely do not think it is perfect, but with a few changes here and there I could make it work so much better and make it more engaging and interesting. Not only that, but I feel that even though I have already taken this course, there is so much more that I could figure out about it.
